| Turning Off a Soap Because of Ethnic Casting |
| A reader shares their displeasure with casting choices at The Bold and the Beautiful. |
I get email all the time. Most of the time the email consists of questions I can answer, sometimes it's just to comment on the state of the writer's favorite soaps, and very rarely it's like the post you'll read below.
This message is the reason I have decided to write this article. When I first read it my jaw dropped. I thought perhaps the writer was just yanking my chain trying to get some kind of reaction. However, the more I read it, the more convinced I am that they're dead serious. Instead of answering it, because quite frankly I'm still dumbstruck, I've decided to share it with you in its completely unedited form.

I watched the bold and beautiful for many year's, as did many of my friend's! But you want to bring in more RICAN'S! I for one will never watch your show again. And futher more i will e-mail this letter to 50 of my friend's which i will have each of them e-mail their friend's TO NOT WATCH YOUR SHOW ANYMORE!!!!!!!!! -Name withheld |
If you are finding yourself as offended by this message as I am, please feel free to share you views with me by responding on our forum.
I'm still trying to figure out what the ethnicity of cast members has to do with the good/bad aspects of a soap opera. Trying to figure out why it has triggered the author's anger so much that they are willing to give up a show they enjoy. The way I see it is we live in a multicultural society and soap operas are supposed to reflect aspects of the real world, so shouldn't multicultural casts be accepted as the norm rather than an exception? Should a casting decision trigger such animosity that a viewer would campaign to ruin a show?
I'll go on record as saying that I applaud the casting choices on most soaps these days. Not only are many ethnic groups being represented but some shows are going out of their way to cast actors and actresses that are outside of the typical "body image" associated with typical soap casts. I think that we've entered the 21st century with a much more diverse representation of our world than the soap genre has ever experienced.
Now I want to hear from you. Would you choose to not watch a soap because some of its cast was Mexican? Puerto Rican? Irish? German? Asian? Canadian?
Please let your voice be heard...Speak Out!
