What the Internet Brings to Soaps

Dateline: 03/20/98

There were days when I thought I'd go nuts if I missed my soaps. Those were the days before the Net. Now if I forget to tape my soaps I just hop online and grab the latest news and updates.

But more than that the Internet also allows me the ability to get reacquainted with past cast members, and storylines. I have never realized the number of stories that happen in these shows each year, and how many of them have slipped to the backburner of my mind until I was first searching for information on one of my favorite soaps, As the World Turns.

The Internet quickly allowed me to catch up with the history of As the World Turns, how it all started and that helped me better understand where the show is today.

Another wonderful thing that the Internet has done for all soap lovers everywhere is that it has brought us all together. There are mailing lists like the Oakdale Yuk Club, where you can meet other fans of specific shows , news groups like R.A.T.S CBS where you can meet fans of soaps that air on specific networks. I have made many new friends through these means and find that it is nice to have someone 24 hours a day that I can discuss these shows with.

Many of the examples I have used deal with the daytime soaps, but there is a huge population of us out there that also enjoy the primetime soaps. Look at the Melrose Place crowd, the fans of that show are as die hard as the 20 year veteran fans of the daytime soaps. Again, they seem to have come together on the Net, the websites, message boards, and mailing lists abound.

I think this new medium is wonderful, and I am happy to have been able to contribute to it in my own small way. Information is a wonderful thing, but sharing it makes it even better.
