Censor's Passions Commentary - June 21, 2004

Watching Kay find out that she is now barren was ALMOST sad to watch.  I have a hard time pitying Kay.. but this IS sad.. stupid choices made while being the stupidest of all teenagers, has now affected Kay's life forever.   She cannot ever have kids.  Even if she turned her life around and became a half-decent citizen, she cannot bear life again.  That said-- why is she blaming Miguel.  I mean, I know why she is blaming Miguel, BUT-- the true blame lies with Tabby.  Now, you guys know that I love TABBY.. but she is to blame for this particular course that Kay's life has taken.  Kay actually did the right thing, and refused to kill Charity, and then Tabby turned her into the RABID DOG.  I understand that Kay wants to blame Charity for everything-- BUT she really should take stock and realize that her alliance with Tabby has forever altered her life, and that when all the cards have been played-- she is gonna end up alone, and NOW-- unable to forge another relationship where she and her beloved could have children.  Shame, Tabby.  Why isn't Tabby even muttering to herself about her guilt?

That rant over.. I personally think that this is HORRIBLE foreshadowing.. we now have two barren women in Harmony?  Gwen and Kay, the wife and 1/2 sister of Ethan-- this does not bode well for the future.  With Miguel and Charity exiting this summer.. the only place for Kay to go is into cahoots with Gwen-- and this could spell DISASTER.  Could be fun, though!!

I may be in the minority here-- but I am not loving Aunt Irma.  This is a TOTAL waste of Marla Gibbs (is that the right actress's name?) talent.  To have a legend sitting in a wheelchair, muttering expletives is completely ridiculous and only serves to show how truly idiotic the writers are.  This is insane.  I am all for Eve's past coming out-- but WHY can't it just come out with some acceptance?  We are led to believe that everyone who ever knew Eve before her life with TC would OUT her for her mistakes and take pleasure in her demise.  In my personal experience-- everyone makes mistakes.  Everyone that I know has a past.  Everyone has a relationship that they regretted.  Did Eve kill baby cats while she was with Julian?  No, she did not-- she went through a questionable time her life, where she chose to experiment with drugs and alcohol, made a clean break-- and actually did something with her life.  She became a doctor (I am not gonna get into her MIRACULOUS skills as Harmony's resident SPECIALIST in every little medical field).. but the fact remains-- she became a productive citizen.  Yes, she should have told TC about her past when they met-- but she was ashamed.. that is understandable.  But this belief that she needs to be taken down and crucified in front of the town is ridiculous, and only serves to prove WHY people try to keep their pasts secret.. because everyone JUDGES them by what they DID and not what they DO now.

Now-- I personally LOVED Liz and Eve's scenes this week.  To see Liz really relate her pain, ALMOST made me not hate her.. and then of course, I remembered that Liz REALLY does just need to let go and let God, ya know what I'm saying?  But these were good scenes, and I really bought Liz's concern and desire to help Liz conquer her problems-- too bad Liz ruined that.  Did anyone else notice that it took TC like, 10 years to get that wine for the three of them?  My lord-- they were sitting in the living room, and relived 20 years of history.. and then TC comes in "here's the wine".  Utterly ridiculous.  Break this story-- and just move on, writers.. we BEG of you!

Well.. looks like the writers are pushing for another Foxney summer.. even though last summer wasn't TRULY a Foxney summer.. it was more like the Foxney week, and then we saw TheRox build their bond.  I really hate what they are doing with this story, and not just because I want TheRox to get back together.  Because they are RUINING Whitney.  This is insane.. we see her whispering sweet nothings to Chad at the Seacliff Inn, sharing embraces and sweet kisses, and then as soon as Fox appears on the scene.. she is all of a sudden uncomfortable and starts acting as though she wants to be with Fox.  This is ridiculous-- does she love Chad or does she love Fox?  Could we PLEASE have one woman on this show who isn't vacillating between two men-- swearing TOTAL allegiance to one, while supposedly secretly lusting over the other?  C'mon-- why does JER have to make every single woman on EVERY single show he writes a complete breakdown?  Why can't he have a strong woman who just KNOWS what she wants?  Last time we TRULY saw that was either with Theresa and Ethan or Ivy with Sam.. and even then-- they both were forced to pull ridiculous strings to get what they wanted.  Not bashing TherEthan.. but I'm just saying-- JER couldn't just let them fall in love and be the Cinderella story?  Nope-- he had to throw the paternity thing in there and the tabloids.

Why does JER want all his fans to be divided?  There is NOT a single couple on the show that has total support.  The fans are always on one side or the other-- because he continues to build triangles.  It drives me NUTS.

So, Sheridan chose Luis?  That's good-- but at this point, JER has massacred their love so much that I just don't care.  I was always a SHUIS fan-- but JER spent entirely too long reuniting them and subjecting us to Antonio's ridiculous character assassination with the whole "mah waaf" thing.  It is stupid.  So once again-- we get to see Antonio and Luis fight over Sheridan's love AGAIN.  What a waste-- can we PLEASE have ONE man who will bow out gracefully.. Sheridan is NOT the only woman on Earth-- and it is a waste to see two brothers at each other's throats.  Oh, and watching Antonio "kidnap" Sheridan?  What a freakin' waste.  Just keep repeating those storylines, writers-- we NEVER notice.

Thumbs up this week-- We saw a glimpse of old Sheridan.  Watching her face off against Alistair was WONDERFUL!  I have missed this Sheridan-- the one who stated her mind, and showed her utter disdain for what the Cranes have done.  And it was really nice to see Julian confess to Sheridan what he was forced to do to her to sabotage her in the past.  Sheridan needs to continue with her attitude as is now-- because this is what made people FALL IN LOVE with her in the first place.  Keep it up, guys!!

Thumbs down this week-- Fox lusting after Whitney again.  He was supposed to be devastated by his breakup with Theresa-- NOT relieved and moving back to his obsession with Whitney.  It is completely disrespectful to TheRox, but more importantly the fans.  We pulled for them, rooted for them, fell in love with their love.. and now we are to believe it was nothing but an obstacle for Foxney?  Not freaking likely!!  If that is what the writers are selling, I ain't buying.

And now for my RANT OF THE WEEK-- I am SO sick of reading that fans are completely boycotting the show because TheRox has broken up.  This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.  I am not trying to insult anyone-- but the fact remains that I personally believe myself to be a TRUE fan of the show.  I watch it whether times are good or bad, happy or sad.  (Thank you, Mr. Al Green)  To honestly believe that JER would change his storylines because people are not watching, is in my opinion-- naive.  His stories are known to be scripted months, if not years in advance.  While I truly want TheRox to reunite and be a force to be reckoned with, I will not STOP watching the show forever because they are broken up now.  That is the beauty of soap operas-- to watch people go though the obstacles to be together.  Life is not perfect, neither are the television shows that mimic life.  People whine that the show has no payoff, the storylines are too long-- and yes-- that frustrates me.. BUT it is also why I watch the show-- praying there will be a resolution.  I have invested at least 5 years and will continue until they are resolved or the show is cancelled.  If people continue to "boycott" as they claim they are-- the only thing they will achieve is the cancellation of the show-- not the reuniting of their favorite characters.  No matter what the show is contracted for-- the fact is-- shows get cancelled all the time before their contracts are up..  and with Passions at the bottom of the ratings like they have been since the beginning-- if people continue to go ON and ON with their "boycotts".. the network could just give up and say, "This show is NEVER going to have an audience, cut it."  Please, people-- I challenge you all to watch the show and be a TRUE fan, someone who supports the show, not just a particular couple.  I have my favorites.. but believe it or not-- I have not FFed through a show in almost a month-- because even though my faves aren't on-- they are making REMARKABLE progress with many storylines, and could ultimately be leading to what we all want-- RESOLUTION.   Write your letters, make your calls or whatever fancies you-- but PLEASE.. keep watching.

Til next week,
Censor

P.S.  I received a few emails this week asking me why I have changed the format-- and I have decided to be honest.  Part of the decision was because the column was so long-- but also, because I did not want to contribute to people tuning out.  With my recap so extensive that it was five pages long in WORD.. it gave people a way to find out what was going on without having to tune in at all.  I want people to watch the show-- I want us all to be passionate about our opinions-- but I don't want people to "read the show".  Watch it with the rest of us, and be amazed.  Do that, and I promise to keep it spicy and saucy and never to be afraid to say what I think of whatever they have decided to cook up on their storylines-- if you just promise to watch and be an invested viewer, and give me good feedback.  Love you all-- see you next week.
