TV Guide Interviews ATWT's Martha Byrne
Tuesday April 1, 2008
I am a huge fan of As the World Turns. I have been since I was a young teen. I was drawn in by a young lady named Martha Byrne, she played Lily Snyder. Lily was rich, she was beautiful, she was troubled and she was enough to captivate me and make me a life-long fan of the show. Several years ago she left the show, the role was recast. The recast just didn't work for me. I was thrilled when it was announced that she would return to the role she had originated. Now I feel like I'm in a time-warp. Procter & Gamble have decided not to renew Martha's contract and have recast the role yet again. I am not alone in my displeasure over this development, TV Guide's Michael Logan has posted a very candid interview with Martha Byrne that details what's been happening behind the scenes leading up to, and since, the announcement broke. It's a good read, but it did nothing for me but increase my displeasure with the decision to allow the show's leading lady to exit. What do you think of this turn of events? Post a comment and let me know!

I am very upset that Martha Bryne is leaving.
I doubt very much that I will like the one who starts playing Lily when Martha leaves. When the other actress was Lily for a while I was not happy and was bored and will probably feel the same when the new actress starts. Very bad move on the part of the people who let Martha get away.
I watched As The World Turns for many years. Several years ago I started noticing that the stories were beginning to get away from the core families. They were always introducing new younger characters. But when they had a strong everlasting type character, like Martha playing Lily, I still tried to keep watching, I guess out of loyalty to the stablity of the core families. Even though I was not watching, I still kept up through SOD. It upset me greatly to read that Martha was leaving the show. But I am grateful to read the interview and learn the truth of her leaving. I wish her the best. She is a very talented actress and singer. I will be looking forward to seeing her on other shows, not necessarily a soap, but TV movies.
What is happening to the CBS soaps?? Is it the money? What are the powers to be thinking. Martha Byrne has been with the show and has always been an integral role as is Lucinda, etc., I’m very sad. I’ve been watching this show for such a long time. More years than I want to admit. I hope this can be worked through.
I HAVE WATCHED WORLD FOR 47 YEARS AND IT IS BEGINNING TO LOSE MY INTEREST. FRIST CRAIG, WHO IS A GREAT ACTOR, NOW LILY, AND WILL AND GWEN FOLLOWING. WE SEE VERY LITTLE OF THE FIRST MAIN CHARACTERS. TV IS NOT JUST FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE, BUT THEY SEEM TO DWELL NOW ON YOUNG PEOPLE. IT IS CERTAINLY LOSING ITS EDGE. WRITERS NEED TO WAKE UP AND WORK HARDER TO KEEP THE FOLLOWERS THEY HAVE NOW.
I have watched ATWT since 1956 faithfully and I am thoroughly disgusted with Martha leaving. She has been such a fine actress and I just love her portrayal of Lillie. No one else will ever play the part as well. I pray that some miracle will happen and that Martha will remain on the show.
Sincerely,
Marie
I have been a fan of ATWT since day one. I am very sick over some of the roles that are now playing on TV. I know people have to learn about different types of people in this world, but I am sick of being view on TV programs. For instance, Luke and Noah. It makes be sick to watch this on one of my favorite programs and now I just want to turn it off and never watch it again,. We do not have to encourage our kids or friends with such contuct. I know we have people of this kind, but put it back in the closet and be private about some of it and don’t go into such details on TV. We do have some kids that do watch soaps with their parents. Other than that, I am a big fan of ATWT. Please quite ruinning out programs by going too far!!!!!!
I have been watching Martha play Lily since I was in high school, and I am now 31. I actually began watching when the other actress (Heather Ratray, I believe) was playing Lily. My grandmother, who introduced me to the show, explained that this was not the “real” Lily. I understood what she meant when Martha returned. Watching Martha and Jon Hensley together, the viewer believes that they ARE Lily and Holden because we have been watching them as these characters since they were teens. The new Lily has been on for about a week and it’s just not Lily! It’s like she’s a completely different character…Holden has a new wife. I can only count the days until ATWT comes to its senses and brings back their star! Martha, we miss you!
